Beans and Franks Recipe with Big Green Egg
July 13th is National Beans and Franks Day in the United States, a day to celebrate this classic comfort dish. This hearty combination of hot dogs and baked beans dates back to the early 1900s when “frankfurters” were becoming popular in America. The original recipe has been modified over time, but thanks to Big Green Egg and is’s live-fire flavor it can now be made even tastier than ever!
I remember as a kid my mom served a version of this called Hot Dog Stew, so without giving away mom’s “secret” recipe, here is my creation. Let’s get started!
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon of butter
- Salt to taste
- 1 chopped sweet onion
- ½ cup of green onions sliced thin
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 16 hot dogs sliced thin
- 3 28 ounce cans of baked beans
- 1 bottle of Big Green Egg Kentucky Bourbon BBQ Sauce
- 1 16 ounce bag of medium egg noodles
- Fresh green onions for garnish
Instructions
Set the EGG for direct cooking at 450°F/232°C.
Pre-heat the cast iron Dutch Oven on the grill grate. To ensure that the dish has the natural lump charcoal live-fire flavor, avoid covering the Dutch Oven with a lid while cooking.
Prepare the egg noodles according to the package. Strain, add butter, salt to taste and set aside.
Add EVOO and chopped sweet onions to the Dutch Oven on the Big Green Egg and sauté until golden brown. Add sliced hot dogs and continue to brown with the oil and onions. Pour in 3 cans of baked beans, followed by the brown sugar and our Kentucky Bourbon BBQ sauce. Stir well to combine all ingredients together.
Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce heat by closing the top and bottom evens and continue to simmer. Stirring occasionally, for about 10-15 minutes.
Serve over egg noodles or in a bowl like chili and top with the green onions before serving. Enjoy!
