May is National Barbecue Month

May is our favorite month at the Big Green Egg because it is National BBQ month and around here we take that very seriously. With the Big Green Egg versatility is the name of the game … perfectly prepare anything from steakhouse-style porterhouse to tender and moist smoked brisket, turkey or pork tenderloin in the same grill.

Where Did Barbecue Originate?

It is thought the term ‘barbecue’ originated when the Spanish landed in the Caribbean and saw the slow-cooking of meat over an indirect flame. They referred to this method of cooking as barbacoa. As the Spanish explorers ventured north to the America’s they took the cooking method with them. Techniques and taste evolved with new civilizations and colonies throughout the years creating the traditions that we know and love today.

Where is the Best Barbecue?

That depends on who you ask … There are four distinct BBQ regions and each has their own style and specialty dish that BBQ enthusiasts will defend with a fierce loyalty. Differing in meat to sauce, the BBQ regions are the Carolinas, Memphis, Kansas and Texas. South Carolina loves pulled pork served with a mustard-based BBQ sauce, whereas North Carolina uses a vinegar-based sauce on their pulled pork. A thick, sweet molasses and tomato sauce is a Kansas City original, and eaten with the popular burnt ends dish. Beef is king in Texas. Texans focus on seasoning the meat with very little sauce.

Barbecue on the Big Green Egg

Although there are differing opinions around BBQ sauce, seasonings and meat used there is one common ground, low and slow smoking, and the Big Green Egg has this mastered. The insulating ceramics of the EGG allow for precise temperature control even at low heat. And for added convenience, the EGG can handle long cooks without constantly adding charcoal or checking the fire! It doesn’t matter whether you are cooking beef, chicken or pork, because it will always be succulent and delicious (with or without your favorite BBQ sauce). So, wherever you are and whatever you are cooking the EGG will deliver consistent, flavorful taste that all can agree on.
